The City of Surrey lies just southeast of Vancouver, along the US border. As British Columbia’s third largest city by area, the city is rife with agricultural land and produces more than 50 per cent of BC’s carrots, radishes, lettuce and spinach.
Since about 35 per cent of the city is designated as Agricultural Land Reserve, it’s no surprise that Surrey so seamlessly blends the urban and the rural. Farm fresh to tabletop is not just an ideology here – it’s put into practice everyday throughout this ethnically-diverse community. Surrey’s multiculturalism and seasonal, farm fresh elements are intrinsic to its culinary scene, offering a world of flavours and spices at every turn.
Along with its infinite, authentic and locally-owned Chinese, Greek, Indian, Italian and Japanese restaurants – among others – Surrey is also gaining fame for its calibre of home-grown chefs. Two Surrey natives, Matthew Stowe and David Jorge, each recently took home top honours in Top Chef Canada and MasterChef Canada, respectively. World-renowned chef Vikram Vij has also made Surrey the home of his newest culinary venture, My Shanti – further solidifying the city’s burgeoning role as a culinary hotspot.
