Exciting things are brewing on the North Shore, which is soon-to-be Metro Vancouver’s second largest hub for craft beer. Earlier this year, the City of North Vancouver agreed to explore zoning bylaw changes that would make room for more breweries to open up in the area, and it’s giving beer enthusiasts something to look forward to this fall.
We spoke to some of the breweries to find out what’s on tap this autumn.
Beere Brewing Co.
312 Esplanade E, North Vancouver
The star of Beere’s autumn season is their Cold Brew, a full-bodied, coffee-forward stout. At 5.4 per cent ABV, Cold Brew is full of flaked oats, barley, and tasty dark malts. It boasts notes of rich chocolate, smooth cold brew coffee (aptly so), roasted barley, and a hint of citrus. This treat for the tastebuds pays homage to its North Shore roots by using beans from the city’s most revered coffee joint, Moja.
Streetcar Brewing
123A 1st St E, North Vancouver
This brand new brewery is jumping on the caffienated cold one craze! Streetcar’s fall specialty brew is the Coffee Bean Stout. It has the same base beer as its flagship Shipyard Stout, with the addition of freshly roasted Ethiopian coffee beans.
Wildeye Brewing Co.
1385 Main St, North Vancouver
For some, the scent of baked pumpkin signals the beginning of autumn. At Wildeye Brewing Co, so does the scent of Oatmeal Cookies, and that’s the brew you’ll find on tap for fall. The stout is an oatmeal-style beer with hints of chocolate, with a milky nitro-smooth finish.
House of Funk Brewing Co.
350 Esplanade E, North Vancouver
This Esplanade street brewpub/coffee shop oozes cool, and it’s evidenced by its music-centric atmosphere. Even the Brewing Co’s beer names pay homage to the greats, such as the Chaka Khan rotating sour, or the Bootsy saison. While they haven’t officially released a name for their autumn tap, rumour has it that they’ll be celebrating the changing of the seasons with a Smoked Wheat Sour. Its release date, like so much great music, is still to be discovered.
Green Leaf Brewing
Lonsdale Quay Market
GreenLeaf Brewing may be optimized for minimal environmental impact, but don’t let the name fool you: these brewers certainly aren’t “green” at their craft. They’ve been serving up drafts since 2013, and this autumn they’ll be pouring the LoLo Stout. Short for “Lower Lonsdale,” the brew is a dark stout with coffee and chocolate, which, they say, is “perfect for getting through the dark and rainy North Vancouver winter.”
Deep Cove Brewers
2270 Dollarton Hwy #170, North Vancouver
Just like the bio-luminescent jellyfish known to light up the waters at deep cove, the Luminescent Coconut Porter coming back this autumn promises “a flash of the unexpected that won’t soon be forgotten.” The returning beer is said to be warming and sweet, with hints of toasted coconut and rich chocolate.
Bridge Brewing
1448 Charlotte Rd, North Vancouver
Hanging on to every last hope of summer is the crew of Bridge Brewing. They’ve created an end-of-summer/beginning of autumn brew: 1-604-Hoplime-Bling, which is a tart, lime milkshake IPA made with lactose. Find it in bombers and tall cans in their tasting room.
