Deliciously Decadent Desserts Around Vancouver - West Coast Food

By Sonu Purhar

Everyone knows Christmas calories don’t count (right?) – and that’s why you’ll find us embarking on pilgrimages throughout the holiday season in search of desserts that even Santa would approve. Read on for our top picks, and be sure to post your own so we can expand our horizons and waistlines. Let’s get this sugarfest started!

Clever Cupcakes

109-2985 Northern Avenue, Coquitlam
2 minute walk from Lincoln SkyTrain station.

This cute cupcake shop was founded by Juan and Elsa Escobedo, who started the company after searching fruitlessly for tasty, allergy-friendly treats for their kids. Their cupcakes are certainly clever, boasting half the sugar of standard cakes, absolutely no peanuts or nuts, and exquisite designs holding bold flavours of double chocolate, vanilla and caramel. There are also vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives, which means everyone can find a sweet treat that satisfies.

Sweet Thea Bakery

203-20540 Duncan Way, Langley City

Rich flavour, robust texture and a commanding presence are the hallmarks of Sweet Thea’s striking vanilla salted caramel drip cake. Old-fashioned in the very best way, the cake is crafted with full-fat butter, milk, eggs and sugar, and layered with a creamy salted caramel buttercream with caramel drizzle as the crowning touch.

Nero Belgian Waffle Bar

1002 Seymour Street, Vancouver
8 minute walk from Vancouver City Centre SkyTrain station.

Melt-in-your-mouth Belgian and Liege waffles are a treat all on their own – but add a smorgasbord of titillating toppings and you’re in for the mother of all sugar highs. Nero’s Rudolph features the eatery’s famed waffles smothered under vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate mousse, fresh raspberries, dark chocolate, raspberry sauce and white chocolate. Now that’s our version of Christmas cheer!

Sulmida Dessert Café

Imagine diving into a dish of snow with sinful toppings sprinkled atop like flavour bombs of confetti. Originating in Korea, the traditional Bingsu consisted of snow topped by red bean paste and condensed milk. At Sulmida’s, toppings abound with options ranging from mango cheese to Nutella banana and beyond.

Cloud 9 Specialty Bakery

1025 Royal Avenue, New Westminster
7 minute walk from New Westminster SkyTrain Station.

Sink your teeth into one of these goodies and you’ll feel like you’re on cloud nine. This specialty spot bakes up dozens of tantalizing desserts that aren’t only delicious – they’re also gluten-free (some are vegan, too). Our favourites are the pumpkin cupcake dripping with maple buttercream icing, and the satisfyingly sticky peanut butter brownie. Every Saturday, the bakery rolls out cinnamon sugar doughnut holes, as well as vegan vanilla and chocolate donuts with various icings and glazes.

Tabletop Crêpes & Games

1369 Johnston Road, White Rock

Crêpes are tasty enough with their subtle, buttery sweetness, but this cute eatery has upped the ante with a sweet and savoury selection cleverly named after pop culture favourites. We like the Game of S’Mores, a silky pocket of dark chocolate, marshmallows and Graham crackers.

Hugo’s Churros

7899 Templeton Station Road, Richmond
3 minute walk from Templeton SkyTrain Station.

Supported by a mobile churro cart that dishes up Instagram-ready fare at events and festivals, this aromatic shop is known for combining cinnamony-sweet churros with creamy ice cream. Try the churro ice cream sandwich for a doubly sweet, flavour-filled treat that will leave your sweet tooth singing.
