Mother’s Day is soon approaching (May 8), and with it, one of the busiest days of the restaurant industry. If securing a reservation at a local eatery is proving a little tougher than you were expecting, it’s time that you got a little crafty with the occasion.
The warmer May weather is an excuse to get mom into the fresh air, and if she’s a foodie, she will love the opportunity to sample a few options rather than being cooped up at a table for the duration of the outing.
These food trucks are the perfect way to give mom a delicious twist on what she might be expecting on Mother’s Day, plus they’re the ideal way to segway into a picnic, which in our extensive foodie research, we’ve seen that moms adore.
Coquitlam
Food Truck Fest
One of our fave foodie events in Greater YVR, the fest rolls into Coquitlam just in time to give mom countless options for assembling her perfect menu. Whether it’s the sweet and crispy delights from Betty’s Greek Honey Ballz, or the supremely savoury items of Melt Town Grilled Cheese, you can count on mom finding just what she’s craving here. Plus, with more local vendors showcasing their handmade, artisan gifts, the guest of honour can pick out something nice for herself to remember the day with.
Vancouver
Trout Lake Farmers Market
Another fantastic spot to cruise for tasty trucks and freshly foraged morels in equal measure, this East Van market is always ready to satisfy mom’s hunger. While there’s always a solid assortment of four-wheeled offerings, you can never go wrong with The Brownie Bakers Food Truck. When a small business focuses solely on mastering one item, you know they’ve worked hard to perfect it. The cheesecake swirl brownie is proof that their sweet tinkering has absolutely paid off.
Riley Park Farmers Market
Not only one of the top spots to pick up fresh local produce and food items, but this outstanding market at Nat Bailey stadium also boasts fantastic mobile meals. Mom will adore perusing the pantry/kitchen wares while following the scent of the close by line of trucks. Some of our faves that can routinely be spotted on the scene are the top-tier breakfast sandwiches at Crack On, and the freshly crisped buckwheat crepes at Crêperie La Boheme. A fantastic open-air brunch complete with pinnacle leisurely strolling and people watching.
Note: Keep in mind that the market is only on Sat, May 7 though, not the actual big day!
White Rock
The Promenade at White Rock Beach
Speaking of strollin’, what better spot to let the lady break into full-on Mother’s Day strut than at Canada’s longest pier? Walk along the train tracks and down the wooden dock inspecting the catches of the freshly retrieved crab traps. It’s a great spot for a family outing, especially if you’ve got little ones in tow. As you near the White Rock museum on the promenade, you can compensate for all the calories you just burned with a few snacks from the line of vendors there. Little oOties donuts is a mainstay of West Beach, and always deliver with their piping hot sugared treats. If mom has a hankering for something a bit more substantial, then a loaded Tonkatsu pork cutlet dog from Japadog will always fit the bill. And of course, you can’t leave without trying the unique taste of frosty rolled gelato from Thai Affair.
