Summer along the Fraser River.

Take in the sun on the water, or tuck into the shade of a green-and-brick garden oasis in a city that hasn’t lost an ounce of its charm in all its rich history. Take a tour through some of the best patio seats in New Westminster.

Grab a seat in the sun right downtown New Westminster with your backdrop a gorgeous brick building built back at the turn of the century. Not this century, the last century. Kelly & Carlos O’Briens share their patio in front of the Canadian Pacific Railway Station styled in that company’s historic Chateau style. Fancy yourself a fancy rail traveler, sipping your Sidecar waiting for your train to whisk you away to exotic climes of the newly formed federation of Canada. Like Edmonton.

Told you New West was historic. Here’s another beloved institution housed in a building built in 1892 and one of the few to survive the Great Fire of 1898. The Met’s split-level, backyard garden patio sits in a courtyard between neighbouring buildings, a hidden gem and a little respite just off bustling Columbia Street. Framed also by lush green leaves and bright flowers, they call it their “Secret Garden.”

For that feeling of brunch over at your best friend’s living room, swing over to Browns Socialhouse in the Brewery District. Grab one of the comfy leather couches outside and sit back while one of New West’s most up-and-coming neighbourhoods comes to life around you. Funky throw pillows and retro lamps complete the vibe.

HOPS, A Northwest Pub

Not all summer days on the West Coast are so summery, so when the rains come, Hops Pub has got you covered – by a lovely trestle roof hung with patio lights to bring to mind backyard barbeques that last well into the night. Adding to that vibe are the in-table fire pits by which to cuddle up close to your companion – even if that’s your dog, because at this patio, dogs aren’t just welcome; they’re welcomed with treats. Cozy doesn’t even begin to describe it.

 Longtail Kitchen

When the sun does return there’s no prettier spot to be than right along the river and the scenic boardwalk at Westminster Quay. And there may be no tastier spot to be than Longtail Kitchen’s patio where they serve up Thai and Southeast Asian style street food just like you’d find in similar riverside markets on that continent. Sit and watch the paddle wheelers paddle and the tug boats tug up and down the river, or just take in some serious people watching along the busy pier.
