Picnic Ideas on Vancouver's North Shore - West Coast Food

By Avneet Takhar

Metro Vancouver summer and fall is made for food soirees outdoors, so here are some locations to get the views and bites in as we continue to be blessed by the sun’s Vitamin D!

The Fried Chicken Works near Waterfront Park

144-123 Carrie Cates Ct, North Vancouver (Lonsdale Quay Market)
Transit: Lonsdale Quay Seabus Terminal

There’s nothing better than fried chicken and this joint has a flavourful, Korean twist! The Fried Chicken Works’ 4 piece chicken combo, with fries and a pot of Korean sauce is a winner. Top it off with a side of pickled radish! Then get yourself down to Waterfront Park, and make sure you hold out for the sunset.

Covert Cafe and Market near Deep Cove Park

4387 Gallant Ave, North Vancouver
Transit: Buses R2, 212, 215

It doesn’t get more west coast than Covert Cafe and Market, with its signature blue and white backdrop! Serving freshly baked goods, their trademark cinnamon bun topped with decadent icing- voted “The Shore’s best cinnamon buns” is a must. Committing to the sweet summer thrill means washing it down with an ice cold frappe.

It’s all good, because you can work it off by hiking the infamous trail, and relax by the marina at Deep Cove Park afterwards. Yup, you really can have it all!

Andrew’s On 8th near Victoria Park

279 8th St E, North Vancouver
Transit: Lonsdale Quay Seabus Terminal, Buses 229, 230, 255, 288

Corner cafe Andrew’s on 8th is located in a quiet residential area, serving freshly baked goods. We recommend the grilled baguette with ham and cheese, and for afters, the gooey pecan butter tart with chocolate (gluten-free option available) for the ultimate sweet factor! Wash it down with an iced cold brew.

Victoria Park is a mere 8 minutes away, with benches available for seating.

Cafe Orso near Deep Cove Park

4316 Gallant Ave, North Vancouver
Transit: Buses R2, 212, 215

European-inspired Cafe Orso is the one if you wanna treat yo’self. Go for the white chocolate and Baileys triple stack liege waffle, finished off with toasted coconut, banana slices and salted caramel sauce. Pair with the blackberry-ade for a dash of fruity goodness- or their dirty chai if you’re committing to the thrill!

Deep Cove Park is a short walk away, relax by the marina or hike up the infamous trail.

Tommy’s Cafe near Institute Park

1308 Ross Rd, North Vancouver
Transit: Buses 229, 228, 255, 240, 209, 210

The unassuming Tommy’s Cafe is anything but when it comes to the food- they offer the breakfast of champions! The pouting potato bowl featuring poached eggs and hollandaise on bacon and cheese curd pan fries is a satisfying option, and their homemade coffee works just as well as a morning energizer as their caesar.

The wide-open greenery at Institute Park is perfect for munching, and if you’re in the mood for a wander, Hastings Creek is close by to catch some calming moments by the stream.

Eighties near Victoria Park

110 W 14th St, North Vancouver
Transit: Lonsdale Quay Seabus Terminal, Buses 229, 230

Retro Eighties Restaurant provides hearty options, with their self-titled Eighties sandwich coming out on top! A meat-lovers dream with turkey, bacon, ham and fresh tomatoes with hollandaise sauce on grilled sourdough served with a side of your choice (we vet the yam fries!).

Victoria Park is a mere 7 minutes away, with benches available for seating.

They’re old school like their name, so no IG but you can Tweet them if you wanna @eightiesvan
