Langley has long held an important place in BC’s storied history, and now it’s burgeoning culinary scene is adding an exciting new chapter. Here are four of the happiest hours in Langley that show off its unique mix of modern moves and small-town charm.
Beatniks Bistro
As a former fur trade post for the Hudson’s Bay Company, Fort Langley is one of the epicentres of history in the entire lower mainland. So it’s appropriate that its happiest hour resides in one of its oldest buildings. Originally the Moorehouse residence, Beatniks Bistro retains some old world charm inside with its high ceilings and wood beams, and outside too on a large street-side patio shaded by one of the many leafy green trees along Glover Street. Happy hour runs every day from 3 to 6 PM and takes $2 off all appetizers, while beer is $5 and a 6oz glass of wine is $6. The Beatnik wings keep it crispy thanks to a panko crust ($14.50) and the flatbread is good for sharing, with slow-braised short rib, asiago and tomato ($13). Sit back and take in the history, with prices that hearken back to another time as well.
Match Eatery & Public House
It would seem that Match Eatery & Public House has got it all. Housed in the Cascades Casino, it’s a great place to watch the game-–any game, on one of many TVs–or take in a little of their regular live music. You might just want to relax on the patio that’s open year-round and consistently voted the best patio in the Fraser Valley. All that, and a pretty happenin’ happy hour. It’s simple here: the pub food you want, all for $5 a dish. The American Carhop Burger and southern fried chicken sandwich are served on buttery brioche buns, with a side of house made kettle chips dusted with Old Bay. The tacos, mole chicken and crispy fish, are made for two hands and the Dirty Fries are fries jacked up, smothered in spicy Cajun butter, bacon and parmesan. Craft beer is also $5 while highballs are $4.50 and wine goes for half price. Catch these deals Sunday to Thursday, 3 to 6 PM.
Fat Cow & Oyster Bar
Serving up a bit of the style and swagger usually reserved for the big city up the Trans-Canada Highway, The Fat Cow and Oyster Bar in Walnut Grove is Langley’s “growing little secret.” And with a happy hour this tasty, that moniker will have to be amended soon. From 4 to 5:30 PM and then again at 8:30 until they close, you can get a taste of their sustainable and ethical menu with a selection of “Schnacks.” Try the roasted heirloom carrots dusted with cumin and onion ash ($5), or charred broccoli in a smoked cheese sauce ($8). To drink, there’s $4 house lagers or $6 house wine. Or combine a snack and a drink with a loaded-up Caesar ($6), garnished with candied bacon and a wild prawn . And of course, the name don’t lie. Shuck to your heart’s (and purse strings’) delight with oysters at $2 each.
The Italian Osteria & Cheesebar
Do you like cheese? Do you like pizza? Those aren’t real questions. Of course you do. So you’re gonna love happy hour at the Italian Osteria and Cheesebar, a little slice of the Boot right in the middle of Langley. The Joseph Richards Group has adopted the centuries-old Italian tradition of sharing food and drink with families and friends to their newest venture, and it’s well on display seven days a week from 2 to 5 PM and 9 PM ‘til closing. Beers are $5 for a good 18 oz, while a glass of house red or white will only set you back $4. But the star of the show here is the ultimate in sharable foods: the pizza. All of their delicious creations are just $11 each. Go for the classic Margherita with fior di latte and San Marzano tomatoes, or the truffle mushroom with thyme and arugula. Or, get even a little more worldly with the Wagyu carpaccio pizza or the aptly-named “Don’t Tell Nonna” with caramelized pineapple.
