Seasonal Winter Beers from Burnaby and New Westminster - West Coast Food

By Kristi Alexandra

Normally, a cold comfort is a bit of an oxymoron, but Burnaby and New Westminster are brewing up something that’s both refreshingly cool and cheering. As winter descends, you’ll want to cozy up with a glass of these drafts coming out of neighbourhood taprooms until the New Year.

Steel & Oak

1319 Third Ave, New Westminster

Back for a second year, and brewed in collaboration with Timbertrain (the West Cordova coffee roasters) is First Press. This double-entendre beer is a cold brew coffee stout with serious notes of cocoa, hazelnut, toffee, and a big old helping of freshly roasted coffee. Find them in cans or fill up on tap.

As a redux to First Press, Steel & Oak debuts Second Press. This imperial cold brew coffee stout boasts big flavours of molasses, licorice, dark chocolate, hearty, roasted coffee and finishing smooth with a warming of alcohol. To make it even more reminiscent of a freshly brewed latte, Second Press is carbonated with nitro, giving it a creamy, foamy finish. Also available in cans or on tap.

Dageraad Brewing

There’s nothing like snowsports in the winter, and the Velour Toboggan is no exception. This dry-hopped dark ale brewed with raspberries brings back the thrill of childhood memories in an adult pastime. Notes of lemon and raspberry balance out a thick but smooth chocolate malt base.

‘Tis the season–or should we say saison–to be jolly! Birds of a Feather, a collab with Vancouver’s Strange Fellows Brewing, is a dry-hopped saison. It’s spiced with cubeb berries and local sage, giving it fruity, peppery and herbal notes that evoke the feeling of the Christmas season.

Fresh this October was Dageraad’s Belgian blonde brew, Wet-hopped Blonde. Fresh centennial hops gives this blonde ale a punch of citrus, with a pine-y west coast flavour. Now that’s something to gather around the tree for.

Another Beer Co

30 Capilano Way #11, New Westminster

True to its name, Another Beer Co’s brewing up lots of different drafts for the upcoming season, but they’ve decided to stay mum on them as of yet. For now, we can try on the comforting Tactical Turtleneck, an Oatmeal Stout that’ll keep flowing throughout the season.
