With the closure of B.C. restaurants amid the spread of COVID-19, more and more eateries are getting creative when it comes to take-out and delivery.
Here’s a bunch on the North Shore and in Vancouver to check out so you can indulge at home while social distancing.
Vancouver’s North Shore
CC’s Chinese Restaurant 5020 Capilano Rd
Singapore-style noodles chow mein, bean cakes, lemon chicken, beef and broccoli and other Chinese classics are all available for delivery.
Olive & Anchor 6418 Bay St
The Horseshoe Bay restaurant specializes in comfort food made of international flavours with a West Coast flair. Co-owner Lisa Kim is the chef, while her husband, Rick, handles operations. In the era of coronavirus, that means he’s personally delivering orders within a certain radius. Otherwise, people can call for take-out, with online ordering coming soon.
It’s offering daily specials with offerings like seafood cioppino, linguine pescatore, and family-size brandy-raisin bread pudding. Popular dishes on its regular take-out and delivery menu include Korean hot-stone bibimbop, beef Thai curry, and wild sockeye-salmon flatbread.
Bridge Brewing 1448 Charlotte Road
It’s known for topnotch craft beer, but the brewery also makes all sorts of good eats: tacos, bacon twisty sticks, and buffalo chicken dip.
The Gull Bar & Kitchen 175 1st St East
This recently revamped locals’ favourite is serving up spicy fries, roasted veggies, chickpea salad, daily curry, steak frites, burgers and more for
Cilantro & Jalapeno Gourmet Mexican Foods 123 Carrie Cates Court
If your spring-break trip to Mexico was cancelled, at least you can enjoy authentic Mexican fare at home. From huevos rancheros to chimichanga, the Lonsdale Quay mainstay is open for take-out and delivery of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Chorizo taquitos, chicken chilaquiles, fish tacos, and chipotle veggie monster burritos are just some of the options to help you imagine you’re dining by the playa. Just add margaritas.
Hachiro Ramen Bar 140 16th St West
Little is more comforting that a bowl of noodle soup. Look for the restaurant’s feature “shmiso” ramen—a blend of miso and shoyu tare—which comes in tonkotsu (pork) and vegetarian versions. Besides several other varieties of the ramen, there’s also Japanese vegetarian fried rice (with king oyster, shimeji and enoki mushrooms), miso lemon kale salad with edamame and pickled daikon, Hachiro fries with cheese curds and beer curry. On weekends only, splurge on a miso lobster tail with dashi, garlic, chili strands, garlic chips, and pickled daikon.
Ancora 1600 Howe St
The award-winning restaurant specializes in Peruvian cuisine with West Coast ingredients. Pick up dishes like big eye tuna and vegetarian ceviches; sea urchin or Hamachi sashimi. The mains, too, will make you swoon: consider steelhead trout with sakekasu potato puree, root vegetables, green olive and tomato vinaigrette or ling cod poached in white-wine aji tomato broth.
Belgard Kitchen 55 Dunlevy Ave
Freshly made cannelloni, pulled pork enchiladas, vegetable curry, juicy short ribs, tomato soup with grilled cheese are just some of the offerings available for take-out. Bonus: the restaurant has provided free meals to frontline health-care workers.
Bin 4 Burger Lounge 2996 Granville St
Premium BC beef takes the spotlight here; for extra indulgence, there’s the Bin 19 Big Dipper burger, with Brant Lake Wagyu. Other options? Lamb, pork, bison, ahi tuna, lamb, pork, tofu, chickpea/black bean, lentil/wild mushroom burgers, and more. There’s a kids’ menu, too.
Calabash Caribbean Bistro 428 Carrall Street
Transport yourself to the tropics with traditional, tasty dishes like jerk-marinated prawns, goat cheese salad with hot-pepper marinated mango, oxtail stew, fried ripe ginger plantain, and coconut dumplings. Vegans and vegetarians have plenty to choose from, from Trini fry bread with stewed chickpeas and tamarind to house-made roti stuffed with spicy veggies, ripe plantain, and coconut rundown sauce.
Cibo Trattoria 900 Seymour Street
Among the take-away options at the restaurant dedicated to rustic Italian fare are familia-style dinners for two, four or six (bread, salad, pappardelle with braised beef ragu), chicken scallopini, and dolce of the day) and Italian picnic for two: a selection of cured meats or cheeses, arugula salad, bread with olive oil and balsamic, and a daily dessert.
Burgoo Bistro 1100 Burrard St | 3096 Main St | 2272 W 4th Avenue | 3 Lonsdale Avenue (North Vancouver)
It’s all about comfort here: think “darn good soups” (like mushroom medley and crab bisque) and soothing dishes like macaroni and cheese, chicken pot pie, beef bourguignon, and biscuits.
Kokomo 611 Gore Ave | 2028 Vine Street | 3270 Edgemont Blvd (North Vancouver)
The plant-based café focuses on deliciously nutrient-dense meals, like beet-poke macro bowl (with edamame hummus, pickled carrot, wasabi peas, and more); golden laksa noodles; hemp Caesar salad; and frozen acai bowl with berries, banana, raw granola, and toasted coconut. Add smoothies, hot tonics, and treats to complete.
Shiok 1716 Kingsway
Singapore cuisine is the thing. Order items like satay, tau pok (stuffed tofu puffs), otak otak (spicy minced fish cake grilled in banana leaf), beef rendang, “jook” chicken porridge, and bat kut the (peppery herbal pork soup with rice and Chinese pickled veggies).
Beetbox 1074 Davie St
The 100-percent plant-based restaurant has introduced new rice bowls to its lineup of “conscious comfort food”. Choose from Crispy Tofu Bowls (brown rice, avocado, crispy fried tofu, pickled radish, cucumber kimchi, sesame dressed broccoli, miso dressing), Taco Bowls (brown rice, avocado, spicy black beans, iceberg, ‘cheezy’ corn, pico de gallo, crispy corn tortilla, cashew sour cream), and Garden Bowls (brown rice, sprouted legumes, miso-roasted squash and carrots, chili ‘ ayo’, kale slaw, green goddess dressing, pumpkin seed dukkah).
Then there are signature items like its Fried Chick-un Sandwich and Chorizo Verde on a Bun.
Tojo’s Restaurant 1133 W Broadway
Legendary chef Hidekazu Tojo is launching new take-away and delivery menu items that are nutritious and that showcase local, seasonal ingredients. Case in point: Tojo’s Chirashi Bowl, with albacore tuna, Pacific wild salmon, tamago, ikura, and tobiko with organic greens, wakame salad, red pepper, cucumber, avocado, and tomato.
Other fan favourites? Chef Tojo’s Spider Roll (with soft-shell crab, asparagus, and avocado in a cucumber sheet) and Spicy Tuna Roll, an inside-out spicy-tuna roll topped with tuna sashimi; wild Pacific Salmon Salad; and a Sushi Dinner for 2, ceviche-style Seafood Salad, Tuna Tataki, Nigiri, Unagi Avocado Roll, and more.
Three Quarters Full Café 1789 Comox Street
